Are you ready for sled dog racing, parades, ice skating, and reindeer running through downtown Anchorage?
The 2014 Fur Rendezvous is nearly here! This is the 77th time the Anchorage, Alaska, event will captivate the city. From Feb. 21 to March 2, be sure to clear your schedule for a full slate of winter events.
Known locally as “Fur Rondy,” the event began in 1935 as a three-day sporting tournament timed to coincide with the return of miners and trappers loaded down after a winter’s work. The original games included skiing, hockey, basketball, boxing, and a children’s sled dog race.
Today, sports still play a large role in the Fur Rondy, but the games have become somewhat outrageous in comparison with the original contests. Now, you will see sprinting reindeer, outhouses on skis, and a costumed fun run.
Other events at the 2014 Fur Rendezvous include:
- Auctions
- Blanket toss
- Big air demo
- Carnival
- Family ice skating
- Fireworks
- Hockey tournaments
- Jim Beam Jam
- Miners and Trappers Ball
- Native arts market
- Photo contests
- Poker tournaments
- Sled dog races
- Snowshoe softball
- Snow sculpture contest
- Vintage snow march
- Yukigassen championships
These are just a few of the 100+ events and activities at Fur Rondy this year, so be sure to mark your calendar for Anchorage’s greatest festival! If you’re constantly wondering how long it will be until the event kicks off, check out the “Countdown to Rondy 2014” clock in the top right corner of the Fur Rondy site.
